Surprise surprise! Most (if not all) of my favorite places to visit when I’m back in LA are all establishments started by immigrants. I’ve compiled a few of my favorites here below as well as their origin stories. All profits from this post will go directly to CHIRLA, helping and advocating for immigrants and their families in Los Angeles!

While I haven’t lived in LA for over 10 years now, I am a proud Angeleno. My dad moved to the US when he was in his 30s, my mother’s family all came from Greece through Ellis Island, and I am so grateful to have been raised in Los Angeles alongside individuals from varied cultures. The city is especially vibrant (and delicious) because of its immigrant communities.
What is happening in LA and across the US is in direct conflict with the promise engraved at the base of the Statue of Liberty…
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Emma Lazarus, Nov 2 1883
If you live in the US and aren’t Native American you come from a family that immigrated at some point so please show others the compassion and empathy you would want shown to your family.
